World War One British Poets

One of my goals in 2021 is to read more. See other books I've read or listened to here.

I found World War One British Poets by various poets compiled by Candace Ward in a little free library.

IMG_6727.JPG

This slim Dover edition contains several poems from 16 different poets. The poems range from pro war and anti war to family of those at war. This is an interesting view on the first world war, seen through the eyes of artists.

I remember that just before I picked this up I had a conversation with someone (probably my husband) about a poem (no clue who it was by) written about a war (I can’t remember which). It was an interesting conversation. And I was thinking about it when I saw World War One British Poets in a little free library. I thought, well, that is interesting! What DO poets think about during war time? This collection, I think, tries to show several perspectives. There are those who are pro war, those who are anti war, those who were in the thick of it, and those who were on the periphery. Some of the poets are famous, some not. Some are known only for 1 or 2 war poems, some are known for all their other work. Reading this was definitely interesting and I’m glad I read it. I read this for the 1900 - 1950 Readathon and it fit in perfectly. You can watch that video here. Although, I was glad to have read this, it was quite hard to get through. It is violent, dated, and obviously, all about war which is a hard subject. I’m also not really a poetry person. I find it hard to read and usually not engaging. I really struggled to get through this book. I love that Dover has such a huge range of books that are accessible to many readers. I would recommend this book to those who are interested in seeing the first world war through poetry, those interested in this history, people who love poetry, or fans of some of the more famous authors represented here.

Do you read poetry? Do you enjoy it?

This book can be seen in my May Wrap Up.

The Loved One

One of my goals in 2021 is to read more. See other books I've read or listened to here.

The Loved One is the first Evelyn Waugh book I have read and I can’t wait to read more! I found this at my lacal book shop, and picked it up solely for the cover.

IMG_6661.JPG

A satirical look at life, death and movie making in this semi dystopian look at near future California through the eyes of a British Poet, The Loved One is a must read black comedy and a modern classic.

I really had no idea what to expect when I picked up The Loved One at The Asbury Park Book Cooperative. I just knew that I kept hearing about Evelyn Waugh but had no idea what kind of writer he was. It’s also true that I loved the cover enough to not need to know anything more about the book. I read this book quickly after picking it up, and you can see a lot of my thoughts in a video that I did for the 1900-1950 readathon. I loved this book. It was dry, witty, satirical, and dark. It’s follows a British poet who originally came to LA to work for the movie studios. He quickly becomes disillusioned with the studio attutudes and mentalities, especially after his mentor commits suicide. But Dennis Barlow, the poet, finds more pleasure and inspiration from his lowly job at a pet mortuary. He aspires for his career to move into as opulent and sacred grounds as the premier person mortuary, Whispering Glades. When he gets to actually visit the Glades, he falls in love with the grounds, and one of the lovely cosmeticians. I would highly recommend those who read modern classics, readers who like light dystopian, satires, and books about death.

Have you read any Evelyn Waugh? Who is a modern classic writer you have never read but want to?

This book can be seen in my May Wrap Up.

7/8 - 1 More Month of Zero Waste | Plastic Free July | Introduction | Free and Easy Zero Waste

Hi, I’m Mo.
It's July and time to celebrate and participate in Plastic Free July!! Time for another free and easy 1 More Month to Zero Waste. Please make sure to go to plasticfreejuly.org for more info and challenges for PFJ.
In it's simplest form, PFJ is a month out of the year to think about, be mindful of, and give up disposable plastics in your life. This is a month for people all over the globe to come up with alternatives, use reuseables, and avoid disposable plastic. For 1 More Month of Zero Waste, we have tried to be mindful of disposable plastics. We did a trash audit and tried to see what plastics we used and how we could cut down. We learned how to give up plastic bags and bring reusables or make switches to use less plastic. We gave up disposable plastic bottles and learned to carry our reusable water bottle. So what can we give up in July? Let's take a week to see what we want to give up and be thoughtful when we are shopping, eating out, getting take out, and going about our day to day lives. Do you order take out for lunch? Do you use a plastic straw? Do you buy pasta in plastic? Do you drink beverages out of plastic bottles? What swaps can you make this month?

6/27 - Booktube Spin 3

Hi, I’m Mo.
Here is my reaction to Rick MacDonnell's 2nd BookTube Spin. Spin #2!! Let's find out what we will read for May and June!

For Spin #2, I kept the same list so I didn't make another list vid.
I did read 3 books (including #15) from that list between then and now. So I will just count around my list.
Did you make a new list or keep your old one?

7/2 - TBR ASMR 10 | BookTube ASMR | Long Natural Nails, Tapping, Rubbing, Scratching, Bird & Nature Sounds

Hi, I’m Mo.
Here is another TBR ASMR! These are some books I might read soon! It features tapping, rubbing, tracing, with long natural nails. There are bird sounds, bird songs and nature sounds.
I chose all hardcovers for this TBR. All these books were featured in my Summer TBR video (https://youtu.be/dKxoj5eZ-ZQ). I really want to read all three of these and they all have summer vibes to me in one way or another. Now that I have a new job, I have to keep my nails shorter, but on weeks that I can grow them out, I try to get some tapping and scratching in!! I really like that all these books have different feeling and sounding covers.

What is your favorite ASMR sound??

7/3 - 1 More Month to Zero Waste | June Check In | No More Disposable Plastic!! | Bring your water bottle

Hi, I’m Mo.
It's time fore our June Check in on our 1 More Month to Zero Waste Challenge! How did you do giving up disposable plastic bottles? Was this challenge easy or hard?
June is a great time to give up on the convenience of disposable plastic bottles. It's a hot month where I live and that give this challenge an extra dimension! I have to make sure that I am carrying a reusable bottle, glass jar or other vessel if I want water when I'm out and about! This is not convenient, but putting aside your own convenience for the betterment of the environment and world is a big part of a Zero Waste lifestyle. Although it can be annoying at first, in the long run it makes me a happier person!! I know that by allowing myself to be slightly inconvenienced, I am a more mindful thoughtful person and lead a happier more fulfilled life.

Hi, I’m Mo.
June is over and I read 5 books this month! That is a slow reading month for me but I was not in a slump! I read some nonfiction, sci fi, historical fiction, and more.
My goal is always to read at least a book a week so 4 books per month. I just eeeked over in June! I read a wide range of books, some books by POC authors, some LGBTQIA+ books, and although I didn't love all of them, I've very happy!! Some of the books I read were mentioned in my Summer TBR video (https://youtu.be/dKxoj5eZ-ZQ) and one was in my 20 Books to Read in 2021 video (https://youtu.be/2B-1-xsbn1U). Weekly Video Round Up #27 - 6/14/2021 - 6/20/2021

6/17 - Moody Reader Book Tag | Am I a Mood Reader? | Reading Habit and Quirks | Reading Tag | Booktube

Hi, I’m Mo.
The Moody Reader Tag was created by Slanted Spines (https://youtu.be/7mhq-AXn3A0) and has some great questions about if you are a mood reader or not! I always like reading tags that help me learn about my reading habits!
What even is a mood reader? I define it as someone who reads what they want when they want. Some people read more to learn something, some people read for school or their own projects (like videos!), some people read a set TBR whether they are feeling it or not. I read what I feel like at that moment. I do sometimes line up the books that I want to read next. But even if I have a book in mind, if I were to start it and not want to read it, I would put it aside.
Here are the Questions:
1. Do you consider yourself a mood reader?
2. Do you set TBR lists and do you stick to them?
3. Do books affect you emotionally? Does the mood of a book rub off on you?
4. When you’re feeling sad, what do you read? (Or do you not read when sad?)
5. Most often, do you use reading to escape, to learn, or to critically reflect?
6. What is a book that made you laugh out loud?
7. What is a book that has made you cry? Or, if you don’t cry, one that really moved you?
8. What is a book that you didn’t even know how you felt about?
9. Are you more likely to read on a sunny day or a cloudy day?
10. Do you usually “set the mood” when you read? Music, lights, smells, etc?
11. Can you leap from book to book or do you need buffer time between them?

I have so many cat themed decor items at my house! Of course!! I thought it would be fun to show some off and do some lofi ASMR. There is a tiger mask, a vintage cat photo, and a small cat statue. What cat items do you have in your house? What other household items would you like to see with ASMR?

6/12 - 1 More Month of Zero Waste | June 2021 | No More Water Bottles!! | Stop Disposables! | Easy and Free

Hi, I’m Mo.
Here we are in June and it's time for 1 More Month of Zero Waste. This month, let's give up disposable water bottles! Let's get one step closer to going Plastic Free! For 1 More Month of Zero Waste, we participate in easy and free zero waste challenges to change our lives for the better and create less waste!
This month we are giving up disposable water bottles. Learn to bring water with you where you go, use water filters, and be mindful and prepared in your daily life! Bring your reusable water bottle, a jar that you washed, or a cup from your house! By cutting out this expensive disposable we can better our environment and our lives. This is a small step to take but makes a big difference to the world! If you have disposable plastic bottles, please consider donating them to communities in need that might not have clean drinking water. There are disaster areas that need this kind of assistance, but also there are many close to home communities that may not have access to drinking water. With only a little research we can find people in need of plastic water bottles.

6/13 - 1900 -1950 Readathon Reading Vlog | 5 Books! | Monthly Vlog | Modern Classic | Spring in Asbury Park!

Hi, I’m Mo.
In May I participated in the 1900-1950 Readathon created by Books and Thing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCu0QEvzt0k&t=200s). I read 5 books, some modern classics, some nonfiction, and showed you what Spring in Asbury Park!
I was sooo happy to do this readathon and loved pretty much all the books I read! I read 3 nonfiction, a dystopian, a memoir, a philosophy book, a book of poems, a literary fiction, and they were all so good. I read one book for every decade from 1900-1950. Weekly Video Round Up #25 - 5/31 - 6/6/21

6/2 - May Meatless Mondays Check In | One More Month of Zero Waste | Free and Easy Zero Waste | Eat Local

Hi, I’m Mo.
It's time for our May One More Month of Zero Waste check in! How are your Meatless (fishless, cheeseless, etc...) Mondays going? Free and easy zero waste challenge.
One More Month of Zero Waste is an easy way to become more zero waste one more month at a time These are feee and easy monthly challenges to try and hopefully continue when the month is over. For May we gave up meat, or fish, or cheese, or something in our usual diet that has an environmental impact on the world, for one day each week. Maybe you gave it up for more than one day?
A good additional challenge for this month and to continue in the future is to see where the meat (or fish or dairy, or eggs...) you eat comes from. Visit a local farm, visit a harbor, meat some chickens! Does knowing where you get your food change what you eat? Or how you look at what you eat? How did you do on your Meatless Mondays? Was it hard or easy? What did you learn?

5/20 - May 2021 Garden Tour | No Talking | Backyard Garden | Recycled Garden | Compost at the End

Hi, I’m Mo.
Here is a no talking tour of our backyard garden. We use a lot of recycled materials in our garden. We end at the compost pile!
In May 2021, our garden is still very small!! We have a lot of things started but not everything is planted in the beds. Some of our beds are still empty. We have a lot of blueberry plants and raspberry plants, but we haven't gotten any fruit yet! We have gotten a few strawberries! We have some houseplants, herbs, and lots of tomatoes and peppers. Do you have a garden? What are you planting? You can hear the children screaming from the school near us.

5/14 - One More Month To Zero Waste | Meatless Monday in May 2021 | Small steps to a more sustainable life!

Hi, I’m Mo.
It's May, so it's time for 1 More Month Of Zero Waste! We make small steps towards a big goal! Go meatless, fishless, eggless, or dairyless (depending on what you already don't eat) one day each week in May 2021.

Going meatless (or whatever you are giving up) one day a week is a small and easy step to help us give up meat entirely some day! The industrial meat, dairy and fish industries are HUGE waste generators and be reducing out consumption we can extend the life of the planet!! No need to give it up all at once, but it is something to strive for! A great amendment to this challenge would be to only buy local small farm meat, sustainable local fish, or dairy and eggs from nearby farms! Once you start looking out for these avenues to find non industrial food, you might never go back!

Check out some of my vegan and vegetarian recipes on my blog: http://www.madcatquilts.com/blog/category/Recipe
You can also find more about our zero waste journey there! http://www.madcatquilts.com/blog/category/6+Months+of+Zero+Waste
You can also find more months of zero waste here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWDh1Q6VSIsiNKmRTjulSQHRJsTrR2ncE

What will you give up eating on Mondays? I'm planning to do cheeseless Mondays and store bought cheese for the month!

5/4 - April Vlog Style Reading Wrap Up | April 2021 | All 6 Books I Read | Reading Slump!

Hi, I’m Mo.
Here is my April 2021 reading wrap up. I love these vlog style wrap ups! I was pretty slumpy this month by I still read 6 books. Even tho I got in to a reading slump, I still read 6 books this month so I feel ok about it!
As long as I read about a book a week I feel on track! I read a few mysteries, a coming of age story, a book about grief, and a modern classic romance! I also DNFd a book but I will read that book at some point, so I'll wrap it up in the future. I also started a book but will finish it in May. I also go into a bit more depth about some of the diversity concepts in certain books. One book had good queer rep, which I don't see a lot in the books I read. There was a good discussion of found family as well. I participated in Linguathon. Here is noelle7pages announcement vid: https://youtu.be/YGPO9iomAoE I mention a lot of other vids I've made, too!! those are listen below!
How was your reading month? Was it great or slumpy like mine? Have you read any of the books I read? What are your thoughts?

5/9 - May 2021 Plan with me | New Bullet Journal | Yearly Set Ups | Monthly Set Up | Minimalist BuJo

Hi, I’m Mo.
I got a new bullet journal for May 2021! In this video I set up my yearly spreads and the first month of my journal. Minimalist BuJo.
My monthly spreads are all basically the same each month but I love when I get to do my yearly spreads!! IN the case of the last book and prob in the case of this book, it will technically be a six month spread. But you get the idea! My bujo is minimalist, simple and utilitarian. I have a few new yearly spreads in this books, so I will need to work with them over the next 6 or so months to see how I like them! I use a Cognitive Surplus notebook. I used one of these for my last bullet journal as well and I really liked it! You can find them here: https://cognitive-surplus.com
Do you only start a new book when you need to or do you start on every 6 months or a year? I start my book when ever I need to but I like that these books are lasting me 6 months. It feels like a good period of time! Are your spreads always the same or do the change month to month?

Thanks for joining me today! I post videos two times a week. I post about creative simple living: books, cats, zero waste, bullet journaling, beach life, and more!

(BI) Weekly Video Round Up #20 - 4/19/21 - 5/2/21

4/25 -Zero Waste Recipe | Vegan Red Sauce | Easy Zero Waste and Vegan | Simple $$ Saving Recipe

Hi, I’m Mo.
Super simple and easy zero waste recipe for vegan red sauce. Inexpensive recipe that's easy, zero waste, vegan and delicious! Better than store bought!
This is my super simple vegan pasta sauce recipe. Even people who don't like to cook will like this recipe better than jarred pasta sauce. Very easy to make and lasts up to two weeks in the fridge. Longer if you freeze it! Modify the recipe for any size family or dish! Recipe with pics also on my blog! (http://www.madcatquilts.com/blog/category/Recipe)

Ingredients:
1 large can tomato puree
2-3 cloves garlic
1 small onion olive
oil salt, pepper, sugar to taste

Equipment:
knife
cutting board
pot
spoon

Fine chop garlic. Chop onions as fine as you would like, I usually do mine in a large dice. Add oils, garlic and onion to the pan over low to medium heat. Cook until the onions and garlic are soft and translucient. I try never to burn mine but if those are flavors that you like, go ahead. Add tomato puree and cook for a few minutes to warm tomatoes thru. Add sugar, salt and pepper. I add about a teaspoon of salt and pepper, and and two tablespoons of sugar. Sometimes I add less sugar, it just depends what mood I’m in. Cover and simmer over low heat for 20 -50 min depending on how thick you like your sauce. Serve over pasta, use for pizza, use in rice, or anything else you like tomato sauce on.

Using loose veg, canned tomatoes, and oil and spices in metal or glass make this a very zero waste friendly recipe. Refill the spices from a bulk section, refill the oil if possible, and reuse the can (good for seedlings if you poke a few holes in the bottom), or recycle it, to be even more zero waste.

A few notes:
- I know sugar in tomato sauce is controversial, but I like it.
- Add any herbs you like as well. I try to keep a few frozen herbs/oil ice cubes from summer and like to add these occasionally. Fresh or dried herbs work great, too. Chili flakes would also be good, I’m sure.
- I prefer my sauce to be smooth, so I use tomato puree, but if you like chunks/seeds you could use diced or whole tomatoes.
- The better the canned tomatoes you use, the better the sauce will be. Same goes for olive oil.
- This recipe usually yields about 3 meals for us, depending on how we use it. We generally get two pasta meals from it, maybe three, and then I use the last little bit when making rice or lentils (I just add sauce right to the cooking water).

These are 4 books that I might read in May. I'm stacking, scratching, and tapping them. Page fluttering, picture tracing, and page turning is also featured. Do you have a favorite books sound? Have you read any of these books?

4/15 - Try A Chapter | Reading the first chapter of 5 books | Keep or Toss | Backlist Booktuber

Hi, I’m Mo.
In this video I read the first chapter of 5 different backlist books to Try A Chapter! Will I keep them or toss them?
I've never tried this before and it was a little confusing at first but then really fun! I really enjoyed trying a chapter to see is I was going to like these five books and pick my next read. These are all back list books, of course! They were ones I wasn't sure whether I should keep when I did my TBR Shelf Organization (https://youtu.be/KHbRKruJr18). Have you ever done a video like this or used this method as a way to pick your next book? Have you read any of these books? What did you think?

4/17 - The Bar and the Bookcase Tag | Cocktail inspired book recommendations | Backlist Booktuber

Hi, I’m Mo.
I finally got a drink and an afternoon to film The Bar and the Bookcase Tag! The prompts are all cocktail themed and the books recommendations are based on the cocktail prompts!
Jaylen (sp?) at The Bar and the Bookcase (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTZ9I9tX1zOmp7woF7xwPFw) created this cocktail inspired reading tag! This was a really fun tag to do! There are a lot of questions and this video got quite long! You can find some info about the books I chose down below. Since I primarily read backlist the titles range in publishing date from the 1930s to the 2000s. I opted to have a cocktail while filming this! I love cocktails but usually only drink them while I am out. We don't drink much at home. Do you drink at home, when you are out, or not at all. If you don't drink, you can still do this tag, as long as you are comfortable talking about alcohol. If not, that's ok, too! I tagged She wants the Diction (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAVkvyBF0_3aR2yuDzaajGw) and Mishelle Lexi (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCboGrYXHeVXAxTpn7bGJqug), but feel free to do this tag if it interested you! Also, go give these great booktubers a follow! Have you read any of these books? If so, let us know in the comments!

Thanks for joining me today! I post videos three times a week. I post about creative simple living: books, cats, zero waste, bullet journaling, beach life, and more!
